One of Many
There are plenty of things that are completely out of this world here in China. Some terrible, some frustrating, and some that are just down right sickening. However, there are plenty of wonderful and awesome things as well. For every bad thing there must be at least 10 great things. Here is just one of the many things that I love about China:
1/4 Onion: 0.25 RMB
1 Potato: 1 RMB
3 Eggs: 1 RMB (so fresh the yokes were practically orange)
1 cup Yogurt drink: 1 RMB
1 slice Toast: 0.5 RMB
Seasonings: ~0 RMB (hello szechuan pepper!)
Total = 3.75 RMB = 0.55 US Dollars =
Cooking is easily one of my favorite hobbies. It’s fun, creative, and at the end you (usually) get something delicious to eat. The fact that vegetables and meats are so cheap here makes me excited for all the fun cooking I will be doing over the semester. I am quickly becoming popular among my compatriots as the go-to guy for good food. In my opinion cooking for others is way more fun than cooking just for yourself, so I am happy to oblige. Fortunately I spent the last couple of months brushing up on my Italian recipes before coming here. I look forward to making some of my own pastas and raviolis. Good Western food is not easy to come by around here so I’m glad I can make some if I ever find myself pining for something not Chinese. I will post photos at some point so you can all take a gander at what I’m making.
My allergies are killing me. My hay fever is out of control and I can’t stop sneezing. It makes me want to break something. Unfortunately I can’t do that, I start my first day of Chinese lessons today. OK, I admit, they are not mutually exclusive but that’s not the point. Anyway, I’m off to improve my barely (read: not at all) passable Chinese.
Cheers!
