That Whooshing Noise
Exactly 3 weeks ago today, it snowed here in Xi’an. It wasn’t a great big avalanche of snow like we used to get up in Buffalo, but it was still a good dusting. Christa and Laura made a snowman. It was nice, snow is fun. Since then we have experienced literal ups and downs. Some days saw the sun shining and beautifully warm weather, other days saw cold, gloomy afternoons with no lack of depressing drizzling. This past week in particular has had some big variations in the weather. On the weekend there was great weather. By Monday it was cold again and it rained that night. Tuesday was a bit chilly. Wednesday it started to warm up, and now today, Thursday, the weather is great again.
So what is that whooshing noise? You hear it, don’t you? You don’t? Hmm… well I certainly do, and it sucks. One of my favorite authors, Douglas Adams, used to write that he loved deadlines, especially the whooshing noise they made as they flew by. I’m appropriating his metaphor for one of my own: spring has come and gone – very fast. Three weeks ago there was snow. In the intermittent three weeks we had some nice weather, some bad weather. And now just today one of my colleagues (a local here) informed me that Spring is over. What?! Spring just started! WHOOOOSH!
Where did all the Spring go? I want my Spring! Gimme, gimme! Growing up on Long Island I had grown accustomed to a long, luxurious Spring with some brisk weather thrown in just to mix it up a bit. Then Spring would lazily glide into Summer. So where’s my Spring? No where. It’s gone. Mei you (don’t have). Apparently Spring around here is only a week or two, and then it’s straight into Summer with 90+ degree temperatures.
Man, there is still so much adjusting I need to do….

Spring is short here too. It’s March and already it’s getting a bit too warm. I am sweating when I am out in the field on some days.
