What is this bug?

This particular bug is a big mystery to me.  On most days I see many of these little guys running around outside my apartment building.  But I have not seem them anywhere else in China.  I figure there must be a big nest or breeding ground right outside my door or something.  Anyway, out of pure intellectual curiosity I would really like to know what this bug is.  If any of you have some insight into it or can identify it by all means please let me know.

The body is about the size of my fingernail.  As you can see it has 6 legs.  And it can jump about 2 feet. It’s always a real pleasure when they are climbing on the wall and then hop onto your shoulder or head.  There are these red ones and there are smaller ones–about one half to one third the size-that are all black with white spots.

Looks just like aliens in StarShip Trooper!

Man, that is sick. I think my wife would flip if she saw this thing anywhere near our house. It reminds me of those alien ships from the newer War of the Worlds movie, you know?

@donald: I didn’t even think of that, but yeah, they do remind of the those bugs. Albeit much, much smaller

@Josh: I can bring one with me when I come out to your neck of the woods if you like….

@laura: erm, cute is not exactly the word I would use to describe these little critters.

Looks a lot like an Assassin Bug, which I’ve come across in the Midwest. I have no idea if there is a Chinese counterpart. Look them up, though…they’re shifty little guys and are usually brightly decorated like that.

Hmm … it could be related to the Assassin Bug. I’m not sure what these guys feed on, all I know is that they are everywhere. These bugs don’t have antennae though, which I think is a bit odd. My friend thinks they are some kind of beetle, but really, who knows?
